The University of Miami – Florida’s Number 1 College

umiamiThe University of Miami has something else to add to their list of accomplishments- they are ranked the number one College in the state of Florida. US News and World Report Magazine ranked UM number 47 in the country among all national research universities. Ranked number 50 last year, U of M has never held the number one spot before, which belonged to the University of Florida (who dropped from 47 to 53 this year). Just nine years ago, the University of Miami was ranked 67th in US News’ annual tally. That’s a jump of 20 spots in just nine years-a rare accomplishment, one that the former “Suntan-U” has worked hard to achieve.

The University brought in President Shalala (who was secretary of Health and Human Resources during the Clinton administration) in 2001 and has hosted a Presidential Debate, former President Clinton brought his Clinton Global Initiative University Forum to the Coral Gables campus. The University is the first Florida school to ever raise $1 billion in a single fundraising campaign. Approximately 70% of incoming freshman rank in the top 10 % of their high school class, compared to 45% ten years ago.

libraryUnder Shalala’s Presidency, the graduation rate has risen to 80% for the first time. Even among athletes, the rate has risen. Football coach Randy Shannon is ranked third among the Division I football coaches for the academic progression of his players. The one and two spots are held by the Air Force and the Navy. That’s a big step up from the reputation the University athletes and coaches once had, earning the nickname “Thug-U.” The graduation rate for athletes is at 86%-the highest it’s ever been.

The University of Miami draws people from all over the world including students, faculty, doctors and medical researchers among others. The continued success and growth of the University has earned them the number 47th spot in the nation, and it seems that the ranking will continue to climb if they continue on the same path.
