Pinecrest Named “Tree City USA” by Arbor Day Foundation

pinecrestFor the second year in a row, Pinecrest has been recognized as a Tree City USA community for it’s commitment to urban forestry by the Arbor Day Foundation. This national designation requires several standards in order to be named as such. The city must have a tree care ordinance, a tree board or department, a community forestry program and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation. Living in a community where planting and nurturing trees is an important priority is just one of the many advantages to living in Pinecrest.

Village of Pinecrest Wants Your Pictures

The Village of Pinecrest is asking everyone for old pictures of the original Parrot Jungle. They want to keep them as part of the history of the recently established Pinecrest Gardens. Parrot jungleVillage officials are working on a nomination to the National Register of Historic Places in order to include the Parrot Jungle Historic District.

The original Parrot Jungle sat on 20 acres when it opened in 1936. The park moved to Watson Island in 2003 and the site became Pinecrest Gardens with a petting zoo, botanical gardens and a splash-n-play area.

If you have old photos, please submit them to photos@pinecrest-fl.gov or mail them to the Village of Pinecrest. Make sure to include the names of the people in the photos, with an approximate date in which it was taken. A selection of submitted pictures will be on display at a future Pinecrest Gardens event. Deadline for submission is May 30, so scrounge up those old photographs!

Allure of the MIAMI townhouse!

couch couple

For a variety of reasons, villas and townhouses are a plausible answer to ‘what’s next?’ Whether you want to lock-up and take-off for a well-deserved romp around the globe… or  eliminate  entirely the hassle of maintaining a large home ( and grounds!)…  a townhouse can offer  freedom, without catapulting you into  quarters of claustrophobically minimal dimensions.  If you want  independence and elbow room …  and a condo is just too confining…the answer COULD BE  a townhouse.

In both Coral Gables & South Miami there are several in the works – some in the development stages (having already broken ground, or about to)…   others ready for occupancy.  They run the whole gamut, with some available for under $500,000.

Coral Gables Farmer’s Market Every Weekend through March

fruits_and_vegetables2The Coral Gables Farmer’s Market runs now through March 27, 2010. Located at 405 Biltmore Way, the market includes chilis, citrus, corn, eggplant, bananas, onions, potatoes, honey, herbs, strawberries and a variety of plants for sale. There’s also some baked goods available. The market runs every Saturday morning from 8 am to 1 pm.

It’s a tradition that dates back to the 1920′s, when it was a thriving avocado and guava grove owned and operated by City founder George Merrick. Every winter, those involved in agriculture would return to the town center in a three-month event amidst the classic Coral Gables architecture.

In addition to the goods at the market, there are free classes offered for market shoppers. The schedule is as follows: 8 am- Tai Chi in the park. 9 am- gardening workshop. 10 am- a master che from one of the local Gables restaurants will create a dish for shoppers to sample…restaurants like Caffe Abbracci and Morton’s Steak House. 11 am- children’s activities offered. Again, these classes / workshops are free. Enjoy the wonderful South Florida weather and spend Saturday morning at the Farmer’s Market in the Gables.
